  1. Bad Breath – Dry throat?
When I wake in the morning, my throat is very dry and sore and there’s a thick mucus covering my upper throat. When I am able to remove the mucus, I can see that it is yellow in color. I have had this problem for almost half a year now.

i’ve tried mouthwashes but that does not work. Any suggestions?
Sometimes there’s a salty taste in my mouth, possibly from the phlegm.

    • First of all if your sputum is yellow you probably have a respiratory infection. It could possibly be upper respiratory if it has been that long that you are suffering. Your mouth is dry because you breathe through your mouth when you sleep. There are different types of habit breaking appliances,eg oral screen. First you have to be able to breathe freely through your nose. As a mouth breather you are prone to upper respiratory infections due to your air not being filtered through your nose. You could also have a compromised airway which inversely causes mouthbreathing, eg enlarged tonsils or adenoids. Bad breath is also caused by mouth breathing.
I would advise a consult with a sleep centre or a sleep apnoea therapist.
You would get much better sleep after resolving the issue and feel refreshed when you wake up.
      Good Luck

  2. Bad taste/breath in mouth/throat? Post nasal drip?
Hello guys! Could someone please help me identify my symptoms.
For a very long time now I experience a lot of mucus down my throat and I have to clear my throat every 5 minutes. Throat feels very irritated. My tonsils also smell bad, but i don’t have any white stuff coming out of it, even though it both tonsils have small holes in them. Only when I push hard on my tonsils I would get very tiny yellowish pieces, which is not often as well. After I massage my tonsils (not hard) I can feel twice more mucus in my throat. My throat is pretty much dry all the time and I have not a very fresh breath. I feel the disguisting taste in my mouth, same as those small yellow pieces smell. I believe because of this I have upset stomach and my eyes hurt. Does this all sound like a post nasal drip? What is good medication to get rid of this taste and mucus in throat? What should I do at this point?

    Thank you very much!

    • Ew, sounds like you have tonsil stones, I get them sometimes, I believe they are caused by post nasal drip and bacteria and stuff accumulating in your tonsils. Yummy, right? First off, blow your nose as often as possible. Drink something hot, maybe coffee or tea, to loosen the mucus in your throat clear stuff up. Gargle with warm salt water to massage your tonsils. Other that that..I don’t know, maybe go to the doctor. Also, I’ve heard tonsil stones can be related to acid reflux disease, but I’m not sure about that… Hope I helped you in some way. I feel your pain about those tonsils. I get that gross taste too occasionally.

  3. Sore throat causing bad breath?
    Hello!
Each morning I have a very sore throat and I can feel bad taste in my mouth. My throat is very irritated and I feel a lot of thick mucus in there. Tnsils give bad smell as well. How can I combat this in home environment? Any good remedies?

    Thanks!

    • Post nasal drip is a common cause of bad breath, even though it is not often talked about. People are more likely to blame halitosis on a build up of bad oral bacteria. Post nasal drip is also harder to get rid of than a bacterial buildup on the tongue.

Post nasal drip is a flow of mucus from the nasal area regularly leaking down into the throat area. This mucus feeds nutrients to the bad oral bacteria in the throat and the mouth, so the chances of having bad breath are much higher. This problem can be chronic and hard to treat in comparison to other ailments that cause bad breath.

Most bad breath-causing anaerobic bacteria lives on the dorsal (back) area of the tongue, so when mucus drips down from nasal passages, it is in easy access to the bacteria. Also, if you have never had your tonsils removed, debris can collect there, allowing bacteria to thrive even more.

You may need to see a doctor for this problem if it does not go away. To start off, you may brush after all meals and before going to bed. Use a tongue scraper and try to gargle twice a day. Having your tonsils removed may be an option, but it is not safe for everyone.

Since you have a cold, make sure to drink lots of water since dry mouth prevents the saliva from combating the bad breath bacteria. The mucus is basically feeding the bad breath bacteria.

If you have allergies, try an allergy medication with decongestant. That personally works for me to prevent the problems with mucus.
